We all sometimes take a moment to browse our eyes of the horizon of the vast ocean, count the large beasts of the ocean, better known as container ships and admire the size and purpose of them. But very little people actually know about the parts, effort and technicalities that go into one of these beauties that patrol the bays and open waters.
Let’s dive a bit deeper into detail to broaden your knowledge on these ships and the Marine Industry.
The importance of Lubrication
Just like your bicycle’s chain needs oil every now and then, so does the beasts of the ocean, too, but on a much larger scale and in much greater volume – to the extent that there is a whole system to circulate it through a set of filters and a cooler before distributing it to all the moving parts of the engine.
Lubrication plays a very large role when it comes to the prevention of heat, friction and combat wear and tear between the surfaces of two moving components.
Besides the lubrication being so important, the lubrication needs to be able to flow at a particular pressure and temperature – and this all takes place on cruise ships while the passengers are happy abroad and having the time of their lives.
When it comes to basic deck equipment, many people always see it lying around, but have no idea what it actually gets used for – most of these are very important aspects in order to keep passengers safe and to help in emergencies.
Let’s cover some basic things:
- Mooring Lines (those large ropes lying on the deck) – these are used to secure a ship to a pier or another ship
- Bollard (those big poles where a ship is normally standing in the harbour) – this is where the mooring line is attached
- Anchor Windlass (the big metal system with the anchor chain) – this is used to pull up the anchor and also to control other lines or wires
Of course, these are very basic pieces of equipment you can find on the beasts of the ocean, but these are the ones seen most by people who do not work in the industry and might not even have known the names up until this very moment!
Alignment Parts of The Beasts of the Ocean
This is not so much seen by passengers on ships, but it plays a key factor in making any cruise or shipment a successful and smooth one!
Without aligning the parts of a ship and its accessories, things will go lopsided pretty quickly and would call for absolute disaster, but with the right alignment parts, the following can be achieved:
- Avoid undesirable vibrations and their effects
- Prevents costly repairs and immobilization of the vessel
- Ensures that the line shafting is in the best running conditions
- Improve efficiency of the whole propulsion system
These all mainly focus on the alignment of the shaft and as you can see, is used for many important aspects to ensure the ship’s best condition and functionality.
As you can see from the above mentioned, there are many technical things that goes into a ship that most people are unaware of.
